"Football's Dark Age"

Football before Rockne was dull and boring. Back then they called the forward pass the “projectile pass”. The first coach to ever use the forward pass was Eddie Cochems of Saint Louis University on Sept. 5, 1906, this game was scoreless, he was frustrated with his teams inability to move the ball. After the loss, they secretly practiced the play for weeks. The next game they used the forward pass against Carroll College, they were successful. Saint Louis University beat Carrol 22-0. This became a deadly play in football. This followed many rules to prevent deaths and serious injuries around the country. There were many odd rules, if a ball was caught in the end zone it would be ruled as a touchback, if a ball was caught within 5-yards of the line of scrimmage it would be ruled as a turnover.
