Principal's Message 2005-2006

Welcome to Bellmar Middle School ! It is our intent to provide you with a rigorous scholastic preparation for high school and life long learning. Expectations for you are set at a high bar especially with the "No Child Left Behind Act" that requires each of you to perform at either an advanced or proficient skill level. Learning the three R's, reading, writing, arithmetic, is the goal for every student. Furthermore, you must be able to write with clarity, read for comprehension, and be able to compute. Without these skills your life will be severely diminished.

Now is the time to take responsibility for your intellectual development. In our democratic society you will be held accountable for your academic achievement. We live in the age of accountability, standards, and test scores. Gaining a solid foundation in the rudiments of literature, prose and mathematics will ensure your success as you proceed through school to prepare for higher education and a career.

This school year we will focus on a school theme presenting "The Greatest Generation" as a model of excellence. These Americans came of age during the Great Depression and World War II and went on to build the modern America we know. Born between 1901 and 1924, the G.I. Generation made great sacrifices throughout their lives with common core values including duty, honor, courage, service, love of family and country, and above all, responsibility for one's self. This is the generation that suffered through economic hardship and persevered through war. The greatest quality they exemplified was serving something greater than themselves. In their time, individual and collective survival depended on a selfless sense of commitment to a common cause.

The people of the Greatest Generation realized as we must also that we humans are not the center of the universe, and the world owes us nothing. As for meaning and purpose in life, we have to find them.

We will bring to life the inspiring stories of men and women who gave new meaning to the ideals of sound character and strong values. From military heroes to community and business leaders to ordinary citizens, we honor this generation that gave so much and asked so little. Their lives are the stories of everyday heroes who lived in extraordinary times. These G.I.'s made the ultimate commitment to public service and community. This generation represents powerful images for impressionable youngsters as yourselves. Learn from these individuals and take their qualities to heart. You can show the G.I's an appreciation for all they did by what you intend to do this school year.

Have a productive school year,          Stephen V. Russell   Principal
